February, 2005 (Palm Springs, Calif) – The California Real Estate Inspection Association (CREIA) is proud to announce that in January 2005, nearly 100 of its members from all over the state participated in the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) Safety Assessment Program (SAP) to qualify as Postearthquake Safety Evaluators. Many of those CREIA members signed-up with the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to volunteer their skills and training after a disaster, as a community service without pay.

After a strong earthquake homes, buildings and infrastructure will be damaged and our day-to-day life will be severely disrupted. The last two major events, the Northridge and Loma Prieta earthquakes, damaged tens of thousands of homes and buildings leaving thousands upon thousands of families wondering if their homes were safe to enter or occupy. Hundreds of trained and qualified individuals are needed at these times to provide rapid evaluation to determine if damaged homes are safe to occupy.

Local governments do not have the necessary manpower to respond to such widespread damage. The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services maintains a list of trained and qualified Safety Assessment Program volunteers in the state to evaluate damaged structures.

CREIA members will staff a 24/7 phone line to dispatch qualified CREIA SAP volunteer members to a disaster area when called upon by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. This effort to be prepared by CREIA members is just another example of the association’s commitment to consumer protection and education

In the aftermath of a seismic event, it is imperative that you have a qualified, professional home inspector provide you with independent, unbiased information about the house, to protect you from costly mistakes and needless misgivings.

Since 1976, CREIA, a non-profit voluntary membership organization has been providing education, training, and support services to the real estate inspection industry and to the public. Inspectors must adhere to CREIA's Code of Ethics and follow the Standards of Practice developed by the association. These Standards of Practice have been recognized by the State of California, and are considered the source for home inspector Standard of Care by the real estate and legal communities.

CREIA requires its members to successfully pass a comprehensive written examination of property systems and complete 30 hours of continuing education each year. Members can accumulate credits through various sources of education including monthly chapter meetings, conferences, and other approved activities. CREIA keeps records to ensure that members are complying with the requirements. Educational topics cover a variety of technical subjects including updates and advances affecting the profession of real estate inspection.
