“The tests of life are not to break you but to make you”
Norman Vincent Peale

Chairman's Message — Greetings Fellow Inspector Members,

May this find you and your Inspection business in growth and prosperity. These have been the most challenging two years in business I have ever endured. If this is anything close to how you are feeling “Brother come on back to camp”. If I wasn’t a CREIA member I’m not sure how I would have survived.

CREIA fulfills many functions and purposes for me. For one, having a monthly meeting with friends, business associates and professional peers is invaluable. Where else have you ever heard of competitors meeting regularly to share their knowledge and experience? I had the privilege of working with John Couden, a General Contractor of 45 years in San Francisco. He used to say “If you think you don’t need to learn everyday you need to get out of this business.” That’s the way I feel about our Profession.

By the way, this is a Profession separate and unique as recognized by the State of California Legislature and Business and Professions Code. I never understood why do we refer to ourselves as an Industry. An industry (from Latin industrius, "diligent, industrious") is the manufacturing of a good or service within a category. On the other hand one could say Inspectors are diligent and industrious. I for one prefer to refer to ourselve’s as a Profession.

Allen Insurance "The" Source for Home Inspector Insurance Since 1992

The opportunity of continual educational that CREIA offers is unlike anything I’ve ever seen or heard. While every other Inspection organization requires less continuing educational hours a year, we require the most. Can you really keep pace with the Building Codes, construction technology, Real Estate Inspection Profession, Professional Standards of Care, and Business Development and Marketing in less than 30 hours a year? I certainly can’t and continue to improve anyway. I remember thinking that doing 50 and 60 inspections a month meant I was a good inspector. I was good for something but it wasn’t being a good inspector. I have CREIA and my fellowship with many Inspector Members to Thank for being a better inspector. That’s why I am proud to serve as your Chairman because I know I could never give back what I have all ready received.

Your incoming Board of Directors (BOD) is really fired up to bring you increased value as a CREIA member. Al Virtue (San Diego) is back on the BOD in a big way. As your Membership Chair he single handedly (with Board Members feedback) brought you the Membership Survey. We will be publishing the survey results for all to see and will let you know what the Board intends to do with your feed back. Thank you to the 323 members that took the time to complete and return the survey. Al has also brought us a Pool & Spa Standards of Practice to accompany CREIA’s Pool & Spa Agreement. The BOD will approve and make available for each of your greater liability protection. The BOD are your representatives and we need your opinions and feedback. Hopefully more Members will take the time to complete the next survey.

Michael Schindler (Inland Empire) has brought us the successful ASK.CREIA.ORG site which has 131,789 page views as of yesterday. The traffic to this site is growing daily. Are you sending your clients and Realtors to this site? Do you realize that this is a powerful assist for you and your clients demonstrating further that you are a Real Estate Inspection Professional? Stay tuned for more to come with this site.

Peter Boyd (Sacramento) has also come back on the BOD and is Chairing the Website Task Force. Our group knows we can increase the effectiveness of our web site including the number of Inspections our Inspector Members receive. We will be reporting on our progress in our next E-Journal.

Jesse Rusmisel (Central Coast) is joining us as Regional Director and Education Chair. He will be facilitating a number of the best Inspection educational opportunities available at multiple locations throughout our state. The CREIA Roadshow is coming closer to you all a couple more times this and next year. Day long events within driving distance from your home. Each with new information that will help improve “Every Inspector’s Every Inspection”. Douglas Hansen is presenting the ’07 California Building Codes with his new Code Check in San Diego on July 30th. As always, Douglas provides a concise review of what is new in the Building Codes with the best reference guides available to our profession. Who of us can afford to miss this educational opportunity? In case you are mumbling to yourself that you don’t need to know the codes because you do your inspection in accordance with CREIA Standards of Practice (SOP) know this. If you inspect to the CREIA Standards Practice you are conducting a C Grade inspection at best. I recently heard one Realtor refer to such an inspection as very Vanilla.

Duane McCutcheon (West LA) has tirelessly continued with our new CREIA Approved Provider (CAP) program. He has also brought us Memorandum’s of Understanding (MOU) with Build It Green one of the leading organizations in California. Another MOU from California Home Energy Efficiency Rating Services (CHEERS). Duane continues to keep our professional future’s in mind. There are many amongst us that know we are much more than Home Inspector’s. These relationships are towards defining CREIA’s role in Energy and Resource Conservation in California. This is for the development of additional profit centers for our inspections.

Without the capable leadership and persistence of Michael Foschaar as the Immediate Past Chairman of the BOD the preceding would not be proceeding. He has been assisting with the CAP program to bring it to fore. He is generously staying on the Board to ensure continuity of our purpose and be our new Public Relations Chair. In keeping with his practice, any CREIA member may address the BOD at the beginning of our next meeting on July 31st in San Diego. If you have interest in CREIA Leadership you are invited to Leadership Day the morning of the BOD meeting. Your Chapter President will be introduced to CREIA Leadership.

As in Life you get back what you give. If you do not give or contribute to your Fellow Members you won’t get back much. Then our organization might not seem a good value to you. We are confident that we are bringing growth and change. We look forward to seeing what energy and talent you will share with CREIA.

Bill Parker, CCI
Chairman of the Board 2009/2010
