Chairman's Message — What A Great Year, THANK YOU! Not quite 12 months ago, I was elected to be the CREIA Chairman of the Board for 2008-2009. At that time, it was unclear what the future held for CREIA and CREIA members. Membership was falling, the housing bubble had already burst and even seasoned inspectors were finding it hard keep their businesses open. The challenges for the new incoming Board of Directors were pretty overwhelming. Not only did those new Board members have to deal with a slow economy but CREIA had a commitment to host a yearly conference in Scottsdale, AZ in May. Like any great team, all Board members rose to the challenge to reverse CREIA’s downward course and make a stronger association. Headed by Bill Parker as Education Chairmen, we started by raising the level of education, bringing industry recognized speakers to the new Traveling Roadshow events. Every event was both a money maker for CREIA and also provided cutting-edge education in members’ local areas. So, if you wanted to hear the latest and greatest Plumbing presentation by Mike Casey, you could go to San Luis Obispo for an all day event. How about Douglas Hansen teaching the Significant Code changes in Oakland? Yep, we did that! If Jerry McCarthy was who you wanted to hear, CREIA brought him to Sacramento in November (with the significant help of Peter Boyd and his company). Dale Feb, the expert in fireplace/ chimney presentations, showed us what to look for in February in Orange county. The conference in Scottsdale has been postponed for two years but was still a commitment that CREIA had to satisfy. In addition, CREIA members enjoy socializing with other inspectors and keeping up-to-date with vendor offerings. The conference is the perfect place to do that! The task of bringing new and interesting topics and speakers to the conference fell to two men: Sam Jabuka and Tim Hemm. By listening to what the rank and file CREIA member wanted to pay to see, Sam and Tim set to work bringing the best-in-the-industry to Arizona. Beginning with a software education day on Thursday until Sunday’s late afternoon final presentation, inspectors learned from leaders in their respective fields. From solar PV inspections to Internet marketing; Tile Roofing Institute certifications to keeping you out of a lawsuit, the Scottsdale conference had it all! CREIA teamed up with Arizona ASHI to “put butts in the seats” and the result was the strongest conference attendance CREIA has had in years. A special “Thank you” goes out to Sam and Tim, as well as all those on the Conference committee who helped make this event a success. Mike Schindler approached CREIA in November with the idea of creating a website that could bring name recognition to all CREIA members. His project, ASK.CREIA.org, went from idea to reality in less than three months. To date, ASK.CREIA.org has logged in more than 90,000 hits. That is just from CREIA members’ distribution ASK.CREIA.org business cards to buyers, sellers, real estate agents and brokers. With that kind of internet exposure, CREIA can now start to sell advertising as banner ads to interested parties. And that means a stronger financial CREIA organization and also greater exposure to potential inspector clients. Another “Thank you” to Michael and the volunteers that helped create and run this exciting new venture. CREIA has been expanding its association with other professional organizations this past year. We have expanded our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with RCI and entered into a new MOU with Build It Green and the California Home Energy Efficiency Rating Service (CHEERS). These associations promise to expand the income avenues that an inspector can pursue in addition to performing residential and commercial inspections. On the legislative side of our industry, Carl Brakensiek has continued to be the CCHI watchdog in Sacramento. For the past 8-9 months, Carl has watched out for any changes that would affect CREIA inspectors gratis. That means without being paid. The CCHI stickers sold at the education events and conference did not cover the time and effort spent by Carl. Any donation to CCHI would be, and is, greatly appreciated. In closing, the last year has given me the opportunity meet more CREIA members up and down the State and listen to their thoughts and concerns. The result of that listening is a CREIA that has turned the corner on the slowdown and one that, I believe, will grow stronger in membership and recognition in the upcoming years. It has been a pleasure serving as your Chairman; thank you for giving me the opportunity. As always, if you as CREIA members have any comments on how to improve our Association, please contact your Chapter President, Regional Director or simply e-mail the Board of Directors through the CREIA website.
