Meeting Details

The focus will be on gunite/concrete pools. Vinyl and fiberglass will also be briefly covered. Industry standards will be identified. Safety issues will be covered. The varieties of tile & coping and the problems that each can exhibit will be discussed. We will identify the common pool decking problems and the symptoms. Problems arise where the fill device connects to the potable water supply. Manual and automatic pool covers present issues, especially when used as a safety device. Pool plumbing problem standards, cover skimmers, drains and cleaning systems, and more.

Drains and drain entrapment are major safety topics today. Plaster problems will be discussed. Electrical issues from the NEC Article 680 and other appropriate sources. Bonding vs. Grounding? What’s the difference?

Fence and barrier codes will be discussed

Pool equipment problems and troubleshooting including pumps, filters, heaters, blowers, sanitizers, cleaning systems, solar pool heating will be covered if time permits.

Richard “Rick” English is owner of English Pool Consulting in San Diego. He works as a forensic consultant in litigation involving pool construction, pool service and pool safety. He has been qualified as an expert witness in California, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Texas, New Hampshire, Idaho, Washington and Kansas.

He participates in the California Contractor’s State License Board Industry Expert program. He is periodically hired by the State of California to investigate consumer swimming pool and spa complaints.
